"Oh, really?"
• Name :: Nin.
• Nickname(s) :: N/A.
• Birthday :: Unknown.
• Age :: Unknown.
• Gender :: Female.
• Sexuality :: A mixture of demisexual and single-target sexuality during her younger years. Endira was the only individual the elf fell intensely in love with and, after her disappearance, was also the only person Nin was romantically and sexually attracted to. The very reasons for her wandering was to find out what happened to her past lover so she can get some closure. Over time, however, older Nin is shown to be both sexually and flirtatiously open to women who catch her gaze, but not be romantically attracted to -- her heart still dedicated to Endira after all of those years.
• Species :: While her species simply refer to themselves as "us" since they do not have a word to identify what they are, they are derogatorily called "long ears" by other creatures and humans because of the elongated feature.
• Physical Description :: Nin stands incredibly short for her age at a measly 4'9" and, while this may not make her appear intimidating, she is incredibly lithe and can escape danger with ease. That is because beneath her cloak she is fit with a thin figure. Unfortunately, Nin lacks all forms of curves and is more gangly and like a stick. Due to this paired with her short, light green hair makes her come off as androgynous. Like the rest of her tribe, she is pale in complexion with two elf ears that extend a few inches from her skull. Like the red of her eyes, her body is covered in an array of tattoos that were ceremoniously marked on her when she graduated from her apprenticeship. Though it isn't evident from the length of her cloak, NIn actually only has one full arm; her right. Her left was crushed in an accident and had to be surgically removed to save her life.
• Fashion :: Nin doesn't wear much beneath her cloak; she dons a white tube top over what there is of her small chest and a pair of white tights that stop at mid-calf. She does not wear shoes and has feet as hard as wood. The cloak itself is white as well and lined at the hem with the repeating pattern of a square with a circle inside of it; this a religious symbol to Nin's people. This symbol is also repeated on a necklace of wooden beads and a pendant. To go along with this, Nin also sports earrings of the same beads. Post-time skip Nin is seen to look the same save her hair has grown out to waist-length and usually kept up in a frizzed ponytail.
• Family :: Erd (father), Udeli (mother), Eendy (younger sister).
• Likes :: Birds, climbing, traveling, exotic foods, silence, challenges, Endira.
• Dislikes :: Shoes, laziness, splinters or hangnails, liars, sweet foods, fire.
• Personality :: One thing Nin will never back down from is a challenge. Once someone instigates her and thinks her incapable of something, she is known to throw herself on whatever obstacle she must in order to prove them wrong. Not only is this done because she detests belittlement, Nin actually likes seeing the bewilderment and surprise on that individual's face when she makes them reconsider their opinion of her. That, in itself, is the most satisfying thing to the green-haired elf. But there is also the fun in the challenge itself. Nin finds it satisfying when something thought to take an arduous effort to complete is done because it is from the outcome of hard work and perseverance; not taking the easy route.
The elf is very blunt and is known to let her thoughts be known. She can say hurtful to embarrassing things with relative ease without taking into consideration the impact of what her words may be. This has backfired many times for the elf and she has lost prospects that would've furthered whatever goal she had in mind plenty of times, but this trait of hers has also garnered respect from several people, especially Endira. The ifrit has admitted she wished she had the ability to say what was on her mind like Nin because, to her, it'd make clearing up any foggy qualms she had with others with ease. Despite Nin's denial because she detests this part of her, even she has recognized the benefit pointed out by her past lover.
Nin's people advocate the idea that being amongst themselves and those like you is the best way to comfortable living and a way to survive. Due to this, her people are largely xenophobic and do not and/or rarely interact with species outside of their own. Ostracism Nin received from her tribe and then her willingness to leave them has slowly changed this attitude in her mind. Nin's continuous meetings with other races has conditioned her to not view them in such a negative light. She soon grew accustomed to differences in other lifestyles and, in actuality, became quite interested in cultures other than the one she was raised in. However, while Nin does constantly remark that she views everyone as equal, she does have some innate aversive attitudes and this is usually seen through her body language. She tends to fidget when in the company of a species that is stereotypically viewed as hostile, like orcs, because she still unconsciously believes those negative thoughts to be true.
In her tribe, Nin was once known as being one of the best climbers of the village. She would usually be tasked with climbing high and/or dangerous trees to obtain the fruit they had when no one else in the tribe was capable. Due to people complimenting her talent, she grew to love the sport, and it became one of her favorite things to do when she was feeling upset. Being seated high showed her that the world was bigger than her tribe's narrowed views thought it to be. When her arm was amputated to save her life, Nin lost her ability to climb. It put her in a heavy depression and lead to heavy ostracism from her people because she was "different" looking and could not provide. In a sense, they saw her as useless, and she, in turn, internalized this belief and felt like she was. Due to this, Nin is very sensitive when it comes to the issue of her missing limb. It is rare for her to remove the cloak that shields half her body for fear people may gawk at her. When she completely trusts an individual and knows they won't judge her for her slight impairment, only then will she reveal her upper half to them.
Nin's feelings towards her people dramatically changed after she lost her arm. When she would brood, she would wish that her village burn as some kind of repentance for how neglected she was. When Endira made her mysterious appearance in the forest and subsequently burned it down after losing control of her powers, Nin has been repressing her guilt regarding the irony of the situation. Despite how ridiculous it may appear to her, the green-haired elf feels her desire is what led to most of her people either perishing or fleeing the village she had come to hate so much. The moment was also traumatic for the elf and she hides a slight phobia of fire. Despite traveling along with Endira, she keeps her distance -- especially when the elemental loses control again -- and it known to run away instead of assisting her as she had agreed to do.
Since she was the eldest girl in a family that bore no sons, Nin was raised to be masculine and would be what many consider a tomboy. She loves roughhousing and getting into the nitty-gritty of activities. She detests being proper and prefers giving in to her wild nature instead. Due to this, Nin lacks manners even during the most formal of events and will never mind them even if she warrants nasty stares from others. Nin chews with her mouth open (with an obnoxious slapping sound at that), snorts when she is ticked off, and never tidies things. She is probably the worst house guest anyone could ever have. Coupled with this boyish attitude of hers is an inability to things that she finds as weaknesses seriously. For example, Nin argues that she cannot love another because, "People always put themselves first," and that, in actuality, people's affections are either fake or used as a means to further their own interests. Thus, when she too starts to form supposed feelings of romantic attraction to Endira, she tries every reason in the book to explain to herself that what she feels is not true, but actually a manifestation of some inner madness.
• Background :: In her tribe, the parents do not pick the name of their children. It is members of the tribe through a unanimous vote that determine it. When she was born to Erd and Udeli, the tribe determined her name would be Nin -- meaning "burst" -- because of how lively she was as an infant. The name seemed to be a prime choice for the girl because she indeed had a lot of spunk and energy as a child. She became the apple of her father's eye and learned to hunt from him even though it is mainly a male-oriented activity. When Udeli had Eendy and it was determined she could not have another child for fear she may die (she had been sickly since marrying Erd), the choice of who would be their family's successor was passed down to Nin. Typically. the title goes to the eldest male amongst a group of siblings, but when there is no male, the eldest female is chosen instead. Thus, Nin underwent the maturation ceremony and received the tattoos down her forehead and on her left cheek when she came of age thirteen. These tattoos -- symbolic representations of strength -- were chosen by her father. The ones going down her forehead were hopes she would have a strong sense of smell because he hoped for her to become a hunter. The scar-like one on her left cheek meant physical strength because she was right dominant. It was his hope the tattoo would balance out the strength in both arms.
At fourteen, Nin was sent to collect fruit from one of the bearing trees in the forest. It was getting on in age and, soon, it was believed it would topple, so it was urgent they collected what they could from it before it did. Upon going to do so, even Nin's weight was too much for the tree and it fell, and Nin with it. The weight of the tree landed right on her forearm -- impact shattering all of the bones. The pain was so much Nin passed out. She eventually woke up in the medical hut of her village where she learned she removed her arm to save her life. While she could live with just one arm, the consequences of looking from everyone caused her to be ostracized due to the cultural belief if everyone looks and behaves similarly, it would lead to a comfortable life. Being an outcast took its toll on Nin because she could not serve a purpose within the community. She could do small things like move object around, but without both arms, could not hunt, climb, or do any other task that required hard labor. For comfort, she turned to the only other member of the community that was also ostracized, but still tolerated: The tribal mage.
Unwittingly, Nin's interest in him leads her to being trained in the art of a limniris. Due to the man getting on in age, he hadn't taken the time to teach an apprentice, and settled for the young elf. For two years, her only stringent interaction with anyone was with her master. She learned quickly under his tutelage and absorbed the first two years of study like a sponge. However, the older she grew, the more her hatred for her people took its toll on her. During one of these days, Nin got so fed up with them, she thought, "I... I want it all to burn!" As if in a twist of irony, soon afterward in the dankness of night, a fire of blue flames engulfed half of the forest and her village. Nin, out gathering firewood during that time, was the closest to the source, and even got to see the culprit, but she passed out from fear before she had a chance to learn what it was. Upon waking, Nin learned that a quarter of her village -- and the only man who paid her any mind -- had perished. Due to losing everything they had, her people decided to pack up their things and find another place to settle. Nin wordlessly parted ways with them there; coming to terms with the fact her life would just repeat itself if she were to follow them.
A short journey into the forest caused her to come upon the very monster that caused the fire. It was an ifrit -- a elemental spirit that, by the looks of the jumble of rocks she had crossed many times before -- was sealed away before finally breaking free. The elemental wandered around aimlessly for a while with Nin at her heels. The elf did not know why she followed her, but did admit she felt a sort of gratitude toward her as she had, somehow, taken her away from the life she was forced to live. Before long, the elemental realized she was being followed, and confronted Nin. After explaining and introducing herself, the ifrit angrily tried to shoo her off, but her attempts came to no avail. Eventually, Nin's following morphed into her traveling along with the ifrit, who she learned was named Endira. For years, Nin traveled along with Endira as she sought out a way to control her powers (ever since breaking from her seal, she had trouble controlling her flames; it was also the reason the fire started in the forest she was in), and over the course of their adventures, love blossomed between the two.
The two were recognized as criminals for the trouble they caused (Endira's lack of control over her flames caused her to spontaneously combust things around her, leading to fires spreading and lot of damage occurring in the places they traveled to), so they found refuge in a faraway mountain valley in an abandoned house. Here, they planned to lives out their lives; due to Endira being taken as a danger, she stuck to the mountain to forage for food while Nin frequented the local village for any essentials. This life between the two of them continued for some time until, one night, Endira just upped and left. For a month, Nin searched high and low for her, until she returned another month later. After a heated rebuke from Nin that ended in a slap, Endira explained that she felt her search wasn't over and, despite the elf's pleadings to not leave again, the elemental continued to do so for several times for another year until, one day, she just never came back. Nin tried to pass the feeling by, but for some reason, couldn't shake the reason something happened to Endira. She finalized one night that she would find her, no matter what, and packed up what little she had and started her own journey to find her.
Some time during the long years she was on her feet, Nin finished up the last two years of study required of her to become a limniris. Her journey became less concentrated on her search for Endira, although the objective was still in the back of her mind, and more on helping out others plagued with lirin complications. During one of these predicaments, Nin saves the life of a village girl named Lorna, and she becomes indebted to the elf; desiring to become Nin's protege. Yet, despite her considering the idea, Nin gently turns her down, her mind still geared to looking for Endira because becoming a mentor meant she would have to settle down. Just as Nin had did before with the ifrit, Lorna follows her about until the elf takes her in as a travel companion; explaining she only allows her to do so because having hot meals frequently in a pleasure and she's a good cook. Eventually, Lorna's persistence got to her, and Nin settled down in a village with the girl. Since then, she has been training her to also become a limniris, though she hasn't given up her desire to search for Endira more.
Unfortunately, some tension rises between mentor and student when Lorna discovered Nin was not as talented as a limniris the village girl thought her to be. In fact, part of Nin's abilities was contracted through an entity living inside her called an iltrix -- spiritesque creatures that devour lirin as a way to balance Neven's shifting levels of energy. Nin experimented quite a bit after she officially became a limniris and one of those tests involved her ingesting an iltrix. Despite being a risky move, the elf downed the serpentine creature and survived (despite receiving some heavy internal damage in the process that required a good amount of time to heal). Over her healing and time thereafter, the iltrix fused with her insides and became akin to a beneficial symbiote. It is one of the reasons the elf does not age; since her body is supposed to naturally release lirin over time and an iltrix requires lirin to survive, it first fed off of what she exerted before turning to the lirin-thick atmosphere of Neven to feed. Since lirin is life energy, Nin is supplied with an endless amount of it to remain living. Though she is physically dependent on the iltrix to survive and is pretty much a walking husk of a person, she has used it to her advantage. Lorna, on the other hand, finds the elf's choice to be incredibly selfish because she holds a power over others as a literal deathless entity; though Nin never once held her circumstance over others heads.
• Trivia ::
All members of Nin's tribe are sensitive to lirin, which makes them prime candidates to become limnirises.
Older Nin keeps her hair up in a ponytail, just as Endira used to style her own, with a braided sliver of thread that was given to her by the ifrit.
