"Oh my goodness, you scared me half to death!"
• Name :: Kiriko Saito.
• Nickname(s) :: Kiri.
• Birthday :: Unknown.
• Age :: Though deceased for more than fifty years, Kiri still looks the age of when she died: Sixteen.
• Gender :: Female.
• Sexuality :: Aromantic.
• Physical Description :: Kiriko appears as a rather tall, willowy woman with a medium, athletic build. She is deathly pale because she is no longer living, giving her an extremely frightening appearance. The only item to calm any fears from a living being is her face, which is heart-shaped, and transforms from sorrowful to happy. Her hair is a rich dark green that streams down the length of her back with bangs squared off as her brows. Kiriko's eyes are also a pale green.
• Fashion :: Kiriko is only ever seen wearing one article of clothing: a green yukata with a lighter green obi. It is covered in a dark green floral pattern that covers the entirety of the outfit. She is also completely barefoot as well.
• Family :: Unknown.
• Likes :: Flowers, full moons, the sound of cicadas, the smell of incense, watching television, listening to conversations, birds.
• Dislikes :: Her lack of memory, frightening others, her forehead, being ignored, noisy areas.
• Personality :: When one looks passed her ghostly appearance (or feigns doing so), they will discover Kiriko is not as menacing as her status may make her seem. She greets everyone who enters her apartment with a lavish and comforting smile -- not with moans and wails commanding them to get out. Like Casper, she is a very friendly ghost who tries to spread a bit of hospitality and joy instead of striking fear into the souls of others. Having haunted apartment 307 for so long, Kiriko has observed and adopted the social niceties required of her to hopefully prevent any renters from fleeing. Unfortunately, at the very sight of her, many have docked out of her apartment the following week.
Kiriko is rather knowledgeable as a ghost and it is understandable considering she has all the time in the world. Since she is confined to the limits of her apartment, the most fulfilling source of entertainment she could tap into was television. She could watch anything and everything all day as long as it piqued her interest. She is actually rather fond of nature programs -- especially ones about birds. It is due to this she has an vast reservoir of information clocked up in her ghostly mind. Unfortunately, television can only entertain for so long until she wishes to converse with someone and share her knowledge. It is at this breaking point Kiriko makes herself known and likewise scares off the owner of her apartment. Thus, most of the topics and bits of trivia she has stored in her noggin is useless when she has no one to talk to.
Kiriko is rather insightful when it comes to other people. Since the time of her death, she's seen a myriad of people come and go from her apartment. This is no surprise because the rent is low due to rumors that were spread about it. Kiriko has sat and observed all kinds of people -- from hikikomoris to aspiring, young college students, freeters to single moms. She has caught on to certain ticks and tocks a type of person has and can compare them to the emotion they're feeling due to how abundant she's seen the reaction again and again. While the repetitiveness can be a key factor to determining an individual's body language, Kiriko tries not to use it as a signifying detail to decide how a person is feeling. She tries to go off what she knows of the person first instead of applying the cliche traits associated to what that person might be.
Unfortunately, Kiriko is rather inattentive unless, as stated before, it is an item she finds interesting. Her mind tends to wander when something comes to bore her incredibly as she is unconsciously searching for something to keep her engaged. When her mind does find something much more worthwhile than the current topic at hand, her brain latches onto it like a lifesaver to save itself from drowning in boredom. Doing this causes her to replace most memories related to the dull-inducing topic and she readily forgets about it to let in memories of something happier. Kiriko's mind also does this to events that are upsetting, traumatic, or depressing. Since she has made it an constant effort to keep up a mirthful facade, she deters anything from bothering her default mood by ignoring it until she forgets. It is because of this trait all memories of her death and most of her life are lost to the twining threads of history.
Just as she is inattentive, Kiriko is indecisive. When given two or more choices, Kiriko tries to weigh them all equally before she comes to decision. She tends to over think the qualities of each choice though, causing her to make each decision look too appealing. It can take her quite a bit to finalize a thought and, during most moments, she can't make up her mind at all and feuds with herself until an outside force intervenes. However, due to being a bit overzealous, she snaps at someone for choosing for her as she begins to recognize the faults pertaining to that choice. This fuels her desire to go for a former option, but if it is a one time deal, she'd likely complain and whine until it was reversed. At this point, she grows stubborn, and finally remains steadfast on the choice she believes to be better.
Seeing Kiriko angered is a rarity; seeing her desperate, however, is a rather common occurrence. She only allows herself to be seen this way when not in the company of another person. She prefers to be on her own so she doesn't disrupt other people's opinion of her and bring about concern. The reason she feels this way is linked to her current status. Kiriko is unsure of what happens next when her spirit finally decides to move on. She wants to know, but is equally afraid of being so ignorant, and stresses the matter that the afterlife might not be what it is chocked up to be. Kiriko will admit she is comfortable being a ghost despite the following misfortunes that come along with it, but her desperation again is open when she too wants to know how she died. Kiriko is restless because she's worked hard to maintain a jubilant outer shell from her living years to her dead ones. Since she always tried to remain on everyone's good side, Kiriko can't fathom why someone like her -- so happy and cheerful -- had to die and it is this reason she seeks desperately. Unfortunately, because she is spiritually trapped in the apartment, she can't venture out and obtain an answer, so the spiral of upset feelings continue.
• Background :: Sasha was a college student renting apartment 307 because it was so cheap. While she was content to own the apartment because it cost so little to live in, never did she come to suspect it already had an occupant. Kiriko let herself be known to Sasha after she had made herself comfortable. However, instead of her welcoming being well received, the college student bolted and ended up spending the night at the local train station on one of the chairs instead of returning home. Since she was in the city on her own, Sasha had no one to turn to take up temporary rooming in and since renting a hotel room was costly, Sasha swallowed her fear and returned to the apartment.
The first thing she noticed upon her entrance was that her clothes were rearranged on the floor to read, "I'm sorry." This crept the eighteen year old out and she fled the apartment for another night before returning with her nerves steeled. Wishing to rid herself of Kiriko, Sasha tried everything to have the girl's spirit move on from incense and chants, to sprinkling holy water, using garlic, to even calling in a priest to exorcise the room. When nothing happened, Sasha gave in to Kiriko, and the green-haired girl finally had a chance to talk to her.
The spirit confessed she was trapped to the home for a plethora of years and, like Sasha, wanted out. Unfortunately, no matter what she did, Kiriko could not move on. She requested Sasha help find out what caused her death so she could be off the girl's back for good. Sasha reluctantly agreed. When asked what she remembered of her past, Kiriko admitted the only thing she remembered is her name. Going off of that, Sasha did some research on the girl, and it started a long journey on having Kiriko remember who she was. During this time, the two had formed an endearing relationship, and Sasha began to regret the truth she had found out when it meant losing the ghost as a friend.
What she had found out was that Kiriko's sister, Mitsuki, had come to America to study medicine. Kiriko tagged along after her because she did not want to be separated from her older sibling. They roomed together in apartment 307. Kiriko went to the high school a few blocks from the place and Mitsuki took the train to the medical school she was accepted in. One day, when the trains were shut down temporarily for repairs, Mitsuki had a friend drive her to campus. Unfortunately, they got into an accident and Mitsuki ended up in a coma. Kiriko was devastated when she heard the news, but she had hope her sister would wake.
Everyday after school, Kiriko would rush to the hospital to sit beside her sister's bed and await her awakening. Despite months of never budging, Kiriko remained persistent. One day, Kiriko was slightly late going to the hospital because she had to help out after school on a group play. Kiriko had the main role and wore a green yukata to play her character. Hustling off the train to the hospital without a chance to change, she ran across the street just before it when the light was green. She was struck by a car in her haste. Taken to the ER, Kiriko died on the operating table. And, by some miraculous irony, Mitsuki awakened an hour after Kiriko had died asking to see her sister.
When Sasha couldn't hold in the truth anymore, she revealed everything to Kiriko, and the memories came rushing back to the green-haired spirit. Yet, despite knowing her past, she didn't move on. Sasha then came up with the idea maybe she had to see her sister to be able to part the world. Unfortunately, records showed Mitsuki had died ten years ago. Kiriko would never be able to see her. Though distraught over learning this, Kiriko consigned herself to her fate as a ghost, and thanked Sasha for helping solve the riddle of her past.
